New Publications

A new book, 'A History of Gerrards Cross' has been prepared by Julian Hunt and David Thorpe, two members of the GX2006 Project team, assisting local residents with the project.

Julian was formerly Heritage Manager, Buckinghamshire County Council and David, Hon. Senior Research Fellow, University College, London.

The book traces the history of Gerrards Cross from earliest times to the building of the church (St James) and its emergence as a Victorian resort. The book includes over 150 photographs and architects' drawings of houses and shops built in Gerrards Cross after the opening of the railway in 1906. There are profiles of the leading architects, builders and estate agents who shaped the new town and an analysis of the occupations and backgrounds of some of the newcomers who bought and rented the first houses.

The book is published by Phillimore & Co, the leading local history publishers, and was launched at the Exhibition with book signings by the authors.

'A Historical Atlas of Gerrards Cross' edited by David Thorpe to document the research of the GX2006 project, with detailed maps and analysis of the development and people of Gerrards Cross. This is a valuable basis of information to help in your research.

Both these books can be purchased locally at:

Gerrards Cross Library which has both books for sale or email us for further information.
