We have been working for nearly two years planning an event to celebrate the centenary of the arrival of the railway in Gerrards Cross.

With the help of a great many people we hope that we have made this a success.

In April 1906 the first train travelled from Marylebone Station to Gerrards Cross and beyond. Until then Gerrards Cross was the home of an old coaching inn, a few gentlemen's houses and a number of farmhouses and labourers’ cottages. The arrival of the railway caused an explosion of development and the special character of the town is the result of the vision of those who planned and executed it.

An exhibition illustrating how and why this happened will be held in the Memorial Centre this Saturday and Sunday ( 29-30 April 2006). It will document the growth of the residential and commercial areas with maps, plans and photographs. In particular it will celebrate the architectural heritage of the early years after the arrival of the railway. It will feature the developers and architects who built the new town as well as its early residents.
